For those of you who haven't heard yet- Millard Fuller formerly of Habitat for Humanity and recently the Fuller Foundation died. Lisa Pierce, Exec Director of Alabama Rural Ministries had the pleasure to meet him. She sent this to me today.
Early this morning the world said an abrupt and untimely goodbye to a saint. A saint who had performed miracles in the lives of thousands of people across the world by giving them the opportunity to own a home. Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Foundation for Housing passed away around 3:00 AM this morning leaving an incredible legacy.
He lived out the gospel and the "Economics of Jesus" which meant we work together to build homes, we make them affordable, and we do not charge interest. All principles from the scriptures. I met with Millard two months ago-just before Thanksgiving. We had a wonderful lunch and I simply listened to the heart and passion of a man deeply concerned for the poor and hurting in the world. He spoke of the challenges he and his wife, Linda had faced over the years but had a strong sense of mission for what was to come as they continued their quest to end poverty.
Renowned by several Presidents and receiving the highest of civilian awards, he was also a man of humble character. He drove me to lunch in his beat up Ford Taurus and we ate at a local diner in downtown Americus, Georgia-where he knew everyone's name. Millard was set to speak at the board meeting for Alabama Rural Ministry (ARM) in a few weeks and was going to host a breakfast the following morning. I was stunned at the news. Our staff gathered together and prayed. We prayed for his family, his friends, his staff, and the lives around the world that will be saddened at his loss. What we do know is that there is an amazing treasure awaiting Millard.
When God separates the sheep and goats as we are told, Millard will stand in the crowd of those who literally reached out and fed the hungry, gave water to the thirsty, took in the person without shelter and essentially ministered to Jesus Himself-because he dedicated his life to being in ministry with the poor-all over the world. In that, we can rejoice.
Yet, I am sad. He was an inspiration to me- the walk across Alabama is in recognition of what I learned from him. He gave me renewed passion for our ministry of home repair and I was counting on more lunches and listening to his wisdom. I am grateful for the short time I had with him. My prayers continue for his family and legacy of the ministry that will continue you on his spirit.
Grace and Peace,
